2. Blog the topic you are expert in. If you have many topics, divide them into categories. Know what is the keywords you wish to focus on.
3. Always update with a lot of relevant content. I would say update it daily. Content is the king.
4. Submit your blog to RSS directories when you have build up your content volume.
5. It is also excellent that you tap on the social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us, digg, furl, squidoo, stumbleupon, reddit, just to name a few. These are the latest trend in web now.
6. When you reckon your blog is decent enough with excellent content, now is the time to go out and contact other bloggers with similar topic as yours. Link building here is the key. It will shoot you up the search engines if you link properly.

You want to make it as simple for the crawler as possible to find what your website is about.
For example, you should always include a link to your sitemap on the homepage. A sitemap is a collection of links to all the pages on your website. Don’t make your sitemap flash or silverlight, just ext, since crawlers can’t read flash or silverlight.
Having flash or silverlight is still okay, as long as you also have text links.

To help google image search find you, all your images should have alternate text (the text that shows when you go your cursor on it, or if the image doesn’t load)

Another thing: All links to other websites should be relevant. If you link to a website that’s completely different than your own, add the nofollow tag before doing so.

Google likes fresh content. Having a blog that you regularly update, and updating your general website content frequently helps you attain a high google ranking.

And lastly, make your pages simple to load. Speed is now taken into account by the crawler, and if your webpage takes an excessively long time to load, that can hurt your ranking.

I would suggest replacing the image – menu links with text so search engines can read it. Once everything is corrected and you have done the basic steps I would suggest looking over your keywords, description etc.. Make sure all pages have a descriptive heading. If you do all the steps listed above you will get traffic. Next is writing content with the keywords in your niche market so spiders and search engines can pick it up:)

Above all else remember that content is king, there is no point in promoting a website unless you truly reckon it is worth visiting.

When it is completed (not before) you can submit it to the huge search engines, this is free. Do not pay anyone any money to “submit your site to 500 search engines” as only about four really matter. Avoid any offers to “guarantee top rankings” for a small fee, nobody can deliver this.

Make sure that your meta-tags and keywords are on topic and not just a long string of well loved phrases that have no relevence to your content.

Please know that you will receive a few answers to this question from people telling you that they know a site that can help. If they post a link with a refferal ID at the end, then they will benefit from it, not you. I know you did not mention advertising, but I will. Do not be tempted to load your site with google ads untill it is well loved and even then, stick to one or two and do not expect to live off the income. If your website has excellent content and is well presented then people will return.

So now we assume that your site is up and running and you are hungry for links. Promote your site as much as you can, but avoid spamming forums/blogs/other websites and stay away from link farms. Try submitting to the open directory (dmoz.org), if they accept you then you have made a excellent website. If they reject you do not be disheartened.
